An expression that bemused me

It was another hot and sunny morning in Kuala Lumpur. The China Town was waking up to its usual busy hours of the weekend. People were looking for shades to escape the wrath of the sun while drifting aimlessly through the shopping street. Our friend ( my subject) was sitting across the aisle of two coffee shops. I was walking from the Paser Seni metro station to  China Town, while I spotted him.a

The queer combination of tiny purple hat, unusually big yellow spectacle and the pink trouser attracted many eyeballs. But what caught my attention was his smile. There was a mystery, charm, and a sign of peace in that expression. I wanted to frame him at once but I was reluctant to disturb his privacy and break that innocent smile by pointing the camera. He glanced at me and the camera for a while. Sensing the reluctance in my face, he winked once. That was the nod of approval I was waiting for. I knelt down suddenly to his eye level and clicked several times from varying angles.

He posed for a good 10 seconds with a laugh bordering sarcasm, pity or something else and then started staring back at the passing crowd with the same mock grin. His face and the expression was something that stayed in mind for the next few days.
